Personal photos/text taken in/out of Vietnam combat zone from perspective of copilot on USAF C-130 345th Tactical Airlift Crew. Not just about the war, but also about the people/places of the region during 1972. This is where I got my first Nikon film SLR which turned into lifelong passion albeit now Canon digital SLR. The photos are recent digital scans from old 35mm slides wasting away in hot/cold attic for 40 years. Extensive Photoshop editing has been used to make them somewhat presentable.

Hue Pax and Guns
Parked on ramp at Hue Airbase in the central part of Vietnam about 50 miles north of Da Nang - 1972. Hue was the cultural center of Vietnam and was somewhat spared until Tet Offensive in 1968. It was taken over by the Viet Cong and then retaken by the US during fierce house to house street fighting known as The Battle of Hue. Pictured are South Vietnamese soldiers mixed in with civilians crossing a damaged ramp to board a Vietnamese C-123 transport parked in front of our C-130. In the background are about a dozen new 105mm howitzers and other supplies.

I don't think we had an airbase or strip at Hue in 1971-72. I worked at the Tactical Air Command Center at Monkey Mountain and should know. And, I went through Hue a few times. Closest strip was Camp Evans, further north, and it was a dirt strip.
